Most expect the seed to germinate evenly, the stand of grass to be uniform, and the contour of the ground to be smooth with no soil erosion. A good mulch application and proper watering are absolutely necessary to produce a sod quality lawn with the hydro-mulching process.

Homeowners need guidance to water properly.

The moisture needed for consistent seed germination usually comes from the efforts of the homeowner with proper watering. However, getting the homeowner to water properly is frequently a challenge. Sometimes they over water, and sometimes not nearly enough. And when it is hot, it takes more water than when it is cool. It is always advisable to provide the customer with written watering instructions. However, just because they have the instructions is no assurance that they will read them, much less do what is suggested. It is usually necessary to monitor the customer's watering practices and show them how to get the proper and needed irrigation.

A poor stand of grass will always demand a time consuming "touch-up", and this can be a nuisance. This minimum charge is a service charge necessary to cover the costs of time required to interact with the customer, the time required to travel to the site, the time to set up the machinery and spray the job, and the time required to deal with the customer following the grass planting process. When the overall costs of doing business are properly accounted for, the value of the time to do a minimal job may be $200. These are costs related to the services of the company. No materials costs are included. With these costs in mind, it is as costly to provide the service of a "touch-up" as it is to do a minimum job.

Using the best mulch is an investment providing better results and more profitable business.

Using the very best mulch with tackifier, applied at heavy rates, may add $20, $30, or even $40 to the overall costs of a home lawn installation, when compared to the cost of using low quality mulch applied at low rates. But if the overall success of the company is valued, and a realistic value of time is considered, this investment is very profitable. If using the very best mulch and tackifier results in doing just one less touch-up in every 5 or 6 jobs, the contractor will have lower overall costs.

But more importantly, the value of business referrals exceeds the additional costs of the premium mulch application. And an added bonus. The contractor has many more happy customers who respect his professionalism instead of being angry with themselves for being taken-in by in inferior, lower priced contractor.
